Explore the New Jersey coastline and learn ways to include this unique environment in your classroom. (Even if your school is far from the beach!). Get ready to get your feet wet as we hit the shoreline to identify local species. We'll discuss everything from sea stars and urchins to fish and birds. Discover learning games, hands-on demonstrations and lesson plans to bring the beach to you!

Seining in our Local Waters

8:00am-noon
4 credit hours
Cost: $40
K through 8th grade teachers
Want a new idea for a class trip for the upcoming school year? Join us for a seining adventure as we learn what lives in our local waters. This workshop will provide teachers an opportunity to identify the challenges posed by this particular type of field trip and practice the proper techniques. Fish and invertebrate identification are just the beginning! Learn how to test the salinity of the water and how to teach the students about the importance of proper animal handling.

Incredible Invertebrates
Saturday November 5, 2005
10:00am-1:00pm
3 credit hours
Cost: $20
Pre-K through 8th grade teachers
Ever wonder how a sea urchin moves or why horseshoe crabs have been on Earth longer than the dinosaurs? We'll learn all about marine invertebrates including how they move, what they eat and how some are able to survive living in harsh environments. Explore new ways to share these creatures with your students through activities and lesson plans. (Also, some crafts for the younger students).
